Aquaponics:Home grown Tilapia feed

Our Aquaponic system is Filled with tilapia fish they are edible their temperature requirements are from 60 -95 perfect for our South Florida climate their oxygen need is low. If the systems stops running for any reason they are hard to kill.

"Tilapias  are  o m n i v o r e  fish and they will accept a l m o s t any type of feed, including veggies, fruit or aquatic plants"

We have both male and female in our tanks we do not  grow the fish for sale, the are only to feed the system nutrient needs. We see our Tilapias them more than food we take care of them  as pets.  More than a  thousand pets.
Most commercial growers Tilapia are male because males grow bigger faster. Using a method to make all female tilapia behave like males, this is acquired by using hormones to genetically modify their behavior.

Commercially fish feed is an excellent source of nutrition for your fish  full of protein, minerals, carbohydrates and other nutrients.
If you run an  organic system thus type of food is not good to use, because it contains  corn soy two of the many genetically modified  plants and other animal bi product.

“There is a big HUGE difference in pricing of Commercial feed $23.00 to $26.00 and Organic feed $50.00 to $54.00 for a 20 pound bag”

Home grown Tilapia feed

Duckweed:
This fast growing aquatic plant  that doubles in mass every day.  Growing at it's best in her ideal environment that is stagnant water and fish waste. A great source of protein, more than soy and  efficiently remove contaminants and also provides  oxygen to the water.
Worms:
earthworms, sludge warm blood worms or  composting worms  excellent food but is a challenge to constantly provide enough to feed all the tanks. It could be a occasional treat for the fish.
Black soldier fly:
These larvae is seasonal so it won't provide constant supply and lots of work because they feed on decaying matter in the compost pile, we try last year and the tilapia love it.

Liquid vegetable feed

This type of feed is prepared with kitchen vegetable scraps, lettuce head or any other vegetables or fruit available and other plant material.

The recipe for the liquid feed is Bok Choy, 2 cups of water

Blender or food processor 15 to 30 minutes of your  time to spend processing.

As you could see in the picture on the big pieces can be fed to Large tilapia and  food for smaller tilapia or Fri will require more blending.

The liquid feed will also feed that bacteria on your system that is vital for the good performance of the system.

"The Tilapias will happily accept this feed or any kind of home grown feed they got to get use to it."

The feed will sink to the bottom of the tank and while is sinking the tilapia will feed on it. Be aware that the system is running smoothly it could get clogged by any  big pieces and it will overflow and you will waste your precious water.
